Girth measurements explained:
Once you get over 200cm or so, different measuring rules apply. Instead of height and years, they use girth, the circumference of the trunk at a given height. This is a more accurate measurement of a trees maturity than height because girth grows more consistently compared to height. More maturity, more roots, branch structure etc.

The Pride of India Tree or Golden Rain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata) is a very attractive large headed tree with attractive reddish leaves in spring turning to dark green, then brilliant bright yellow in Autumn. Larger panicles of small yellow flowers in July/August, followed by bronze-pink or red 'bladder' fruits.

The flowers can be a little shy for the first three to five years depending on local conditions but once out, they would be expected to attract wildlife. If they do not make an appearance after five years then someone might be stealing them in the night.

The Golden Rain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata) has a good range of yearly colours to maintain garden interest all year round. They range from green to purple, orange and yellow. If you see colours other than these then check the leaves for paint or remove your tinted sunglasses.

Considered to be hardy down to minus 15 degrees centigrade which means it is suitable for nearly all of the UK.

Expect a height and width of approximately 3m x 3m after ten years but could go on to grow to around 8 x 8m depending on local conditions. Very local sink holes and old mine shafts collapsing could have a significant and detrimental effect on the height of your tree. Should you want an instantly taller/cheaper Golden Rain Tree, we suggest planting at the top of a hill and buying a house at the bottom or stooping a lot when in the garden.

Pruning Pride of India Tree or Golden Rain Tree
The Golden Rain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata) prefers to be left alone which may come as bad news to the tree huggers, meaning it will not reciprocate. So if you go near it with a set of pruning shears, it will be using its internal voice to tell you to clear off. However you should always prune out dead diseased or crossing over branches despite the no pruning preference of this tree. Best to do in Autumn.

Plant in well draining soil in a sunny and sheltered position. You can plant in not-so-perfect conditions but expect not-so-perfect results. The easiest way to plant this tree is get someone else to do it or evolve telekinesis skills and plant it with your mind.

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.

Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.
