Golden Beauty Silver Birch Tree Betula pendula Golden Beauty
Golden Beauty (Betula pendula 'Golden Beauty) is a beautiful, golden-leaved form of silver birch. It is an attractive tree and of importance is the fact that its leaves that do not scorch. We mean in the sun, not when it is cooking. If you are interested in Betula trees with interesting leaves then the Golden Beauty is a good choice. Autumnal colours include the usual oranges, reds and browns but also thrown into the mix is yellow. The serrated foliage offer a bit more interest than the standard straight line/smooth leaves so if you have a low, leaf edge boredom threshold, then this is the tree for you.

Other interesting facts about this tree are that they like to be called Graham or Glenda depending on the sex of the tree. We cannot tell you which sex it is because of Nurseryman/tree client privilege but you will know if you have gotten it wrong with Glenda because if you call her Graham, she will bear a grudge and never speak back to you. We should point out that Graham doesn't speak much either but under the right windy conditions, has been known to whisper and/or groan.

This tree is supplied at a height of between 1.5 and 2.0 metres in a 7 to 12 L container. Expect a height of around 6 metres at the 10 year point unless you plant on top of a hill then it could be seen as much taller. Golden Beauty could go on to grow even more after that point, it really depends on the mood of tree and how nice you have been to it.

The tree shape is very columnar to conical and the Winter white bark is a very attractive feature. For some reason it is listed as particularly suitable for North UK planting. We are guessing it can tolerate extreme weather and accents?

It is listed as being tolerant of clay, chalk and acid soils so that pretty much covers planting almost anywhere and being drought and wet tolerant you should expect good results regardless of the weather. When we say wet tolerant, this does not include freak tsunamis, biblical once in a thousand year floods and Kevin Costner filming Waterworld the sequel in your back garden.

In terms of pruning, Golden Beauty prefer to be left alone so just take out the dead, diseased or crossing over branches. You can of course prune as you see fit to shape it but it may protest either in the form of a written complaint or just not perform as required.

Good with animals and children and comes from a non smoking home.

Message card included at no additional cost if required. Just add the information required on the card at checkout.

We can guarantee that delivery times will never be as fast as you would like, that the ground to plant it in isn't as soft as you thought it was and the joy you feel for the tree is nothing compared to your first kiss (we are making the assumption that everyone has a kiss before they buy their first tree)

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.

Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.

Water Logged Conditions
Willow, Alder, Birch and Poplar may help lower the water level so long as you do not have permanent standing water e.g. your local diving and sailing club meets on your lawn.
