*Heights and widths are a very rough guideline only, especially with weeping varieties as they obviously grow up for their early years and then down for the rest. You can see by the pictures that the value you receive in buying a more mature specimen is the branch and root structure i.e. there is more.

Weeping White Mulberry Morus Alba Pendula
This is a weeping form of the popular black mulberry and a great tree for a small garden as it only reaches a height of 3m after 10 years and a similar width. It could go on to grow a few metres more but that totally depends on local conditions and sinkhole frequency in your area.

The small yellow/green flowers turn into edible oval white fruits that ripen to what poets might call a face reflecting the surprise of the shower door not being closed properly i.e. reddish pink. These are contrasted by the heart-shaped dark green glossy leaves that turn yellow in the Autumn.

As you might expect with a fruiting tree, you will be competing with the local wildlife for the edibles so expect birds to be making it their favourite spot for date night. As with all dates, the odd one might go wrong so you may see domestic squabbles now and then. A coke can ring pull being thrown to the floor MAY indicate she refused his proposal.

The branches can reach the floor which can be a fun place for the kids to play under or a hidden sanctuary for when the In-laws arrive. Sanctuary is only fully available in Summer and is wholly dependent on your ability to be quiet and/or their level of deafness. The older the tree, the more sanctuary there is so if we see an order coming in for much older trees, you have our sympathies regarding your social hand grenade relatives.

As a point of interest, this tree is used for the cultivation of silkworms as it provides food for them and unusually is suitable for coastal locations.

Planting Morus Alba Pendula Weeping White Mulberry
For best results, lower your expectations as much as possible but if that approach is not for you, plant in well-draining soils in full sun but sheltered position. This includes chalk, loam, clay and sand, so long as they are well-draining.

This tree will tolerate temperatures down to minus 15 degrees centigrade so suitable for most of the UK. Obvious exceptions apply like motorway roundabouts, MOD missile firing ranges and any other land you do not own.

Pruning Morus Alba Pendula Weeping White Mulberry
An occasional thinning of the branches can be carried out to encourage replacement growth.

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.

Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.
