A charming small tree, the Blireana Ornamental Plum tree (Prunus x blireana) is well-suited to the smaller garden as its final height is a mere 5m (16ft 8in), Blireana creates a real colour display in spring, with its beautiful, fragrant, double pink coloured blossom, which covers the tree. Its leaves are also worthy of particular attention, as they are delightful dark purple leaves in spring, transforming to dark green during summer.

Expect this ornamental plum tree to increase the amount of wildlife traffic in your garden. By that, we mean birds, bees etc because as far as we know lions, tigers and the like are not drawn to ornamental plum trees. Unfortunately, you will have to go to the zoo to see those animals and not do it on the cheap by planting this tree. We have not researched this so should any Wilderbeast eating carnivore visit your garden and start sniffing the flowers, then we accept no responsibility.

Planting Prunus Blireana
Considered to be chalk and clay tolerant so you should be able to plant it almost anywhere. This is not us justifying you to plant where you like, I am sure the managers of Anfield or any other football stadium will have something to say if they find you have planted an ornamental plum tree in one of their goals.

It is such a good tree the RHS gave it their Award Of Garden Merit. For those not in the know, this is alleged to come from a super-secret meeting in a shed on an allotment somewhere. Flat cap and welly wearing experts are invited to a posh wooden structure on the understanding there will be limitless tea and biscuits provided while they argue which is the best of all ornamental plum trees. If there is an agreement or a majority then the award is given until something better comes along. If there is no agreement and the shed is split (not literally) then there is a lot of grumblings, welly shuffling and whispered threats of a coup. This always fades to nothing as the RHS is the centre of civility and the matter is put on hold until the next meeting. By this time half of the experts will have been replaced due to age-related issues and a consensus will be reached.

Pruning Prunus Blireana
An occasional thinning of the branches is suggested to encourage new replacement growth. As a general rule, you should always cut out dead, diseased or crossing over branches to maintain or improve the health of most trees.

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.

Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.
