A magnificent native, British tree over much of England, Common Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a majestic tree notable for its attractive green leaves which in autumn turn a rich, coppery colour.  Best suited to parks, large gardens and of course the planting and establishment of a native beech woodland, for example, the Chilterns.  Beech is also very popular as a hedging species, retaining the coppery leaves throughout winter and only loosing them when the new foliage developes in spring.  An alternative is Purple Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'purpurea'), which is essentially the same tree except for the purple coloured leaves.

Woodland Design Principles
Typically, Beech is planted in groups of between 10 and 25 trees.  This number of trees is ideal for creating a wildlife habitat and a meaningful source of food and shelter.  Spacing may vary between 1m (3ft 4in) and 5m (16ft 8in).  The aim is to mimic what nature intended and thus avoid artificial lines.  Blending of one species into another is suggested although bearing in mind different growth rates.  Beech is a key native tree species and along with the many other native, British tree and shrub species we sell will form part of an attractive native woodland.

Benefits of using our plug plant trees
Our trees are sold as plug plants, in other words the roots are encased in compost. This means that planting can be carried out at any time of the year, provided they are watered in periods of drought, compared to bare-root plants which can only be planted during the plants normal dormant period (November to March).  All of these trees are UK grown, which is important for successful establishment.

Feeding Or Fertilizing Hedges
This is a task that can easily be over done. Any nitrogen based fertilizer will do such as 20:20:10 but the longer lasting ones which take 18/24 months are better as they are regulated by the weather and moisture therefore release slowly.

Using Bark or wood chip mulch for Beech trees

If you are going to use bark or wood chip as a mulch for Beech trees, please be aware that mice like to use this as a nest/home/holiday treat/rental property for other mice. They like to eat Beech trees and you are provided them a place to stay close to a food source. If you are going to use bark or wood chip as a mulch, periodically check for damage especially underneath the bark or wood chip layer. Alternatively use gravel or plastic sheeting as a method of keeping weeds down or you could try the legal route and serve them with a legal notice?
