Onward (Pyrus 'Onward') is the result of a cross between the pear varieties, Laxton's Superb x Doyenné du Comice, first introduced in 1947. An excellent quality pear, it is quite resistant to spring frosts. Onward pears are medium in size, initially, light green in colour then changing to a yellowy-green as they ripen, some having a pinkish flush and others a heavy russet. Their creamy white flesh has a sweet rich and juicy flavour. A good cropping pear, it will not pollinate Doyenné du Comice. (Wisley, Surrey 1947)
Month of Picking: SeptemberType of Pear: Eating
Self-fertile/Not self-fertile: This pear is not self-fertile so it is necessary to have another pear for pollination
This pear is in flowering period is C4.
How to chose a suitable pollination partner:
To make it easy to match this pear with a suitable pollination partner we have used a series of codes, which are C1, C2, C3, C4 and C5 and relate to flowering periods. Every pear variety we sell will have one of these codes.
The code we have given this pear tree means that you need to find another pear with the same code or one less or one more, so for example, if the pear is code C4, then another pear variety with code C3 or C5 would be suitable to act as a reliable pollination partner.
This variety of pear tree is supplied in a 12 litre container, which means that the tree can be planted any time of the year and with better results than either bare-root or rootballed trees.
