The Almond Willow or Black Maul (salix triandra) is a small, native, British tree with a notable spreading habit. It can reach a final height of 10m (33ft). The bark of this willow is smooth and dark grey but has a habit of flaking off in large uneven patches to reveal a reddish-brown under layer. The twigs are a lustrous olive-brown, glabrous and often angled or ridged. Appealing catkins appear with or slightly before the leaves during April and May and sporadically over the Summer. Male catkins are a yellow colour and the female catkins are shorter and denser than the male. We have found almond willow to be a particularly attractive and fragrant willow and is increasingly being used as a garden shrub. Of note is that the twigs have a pleasant flavour of rose-water when chewed. Bio Energy and Sustainable Eneegy Willow and Poplar are increasingly being used, at the moment on a small scale, in the creation of a sustainable source of fuel. Benefits of using our plug plant trees Our trees are sold as plug plants, in other words the roots are encased in compost. This means that planting can be carried out at any time of the year, provided they are watered in periods of drought, compared to bare-root plants which can only be planted during the plants normal dormant period (November to March). All of these trees are UK grown, which is important for successful establishment.
