A fast-growing and attractive species, willow is available in a great many colours.  Our mixed willow hedging consists of 6  X almond willow (salix triandra), 6 X cricket-bat willow (salix alba triandra), 6 X golden willow (salix alba vittelina), 6 X purple willow (salix purpurea), 6 X red willow (salix basfordiana) and 6 X white willow (salix alba).  The effect of a mixture of these 6 willow varieties will be to create an extremely colourful hedge.  Willow hedging is also well-suited to planting on wet ground where no other hedge would be possible.

Please use the Fastest-Growing Hedging League Table at the bottom of this description to compare Hawthorn Hedging against other hedging types.

Benefits of using our plug plant trees

Our willow hedging trees are sold as plug plants, in other words the roots are encased in compost. This means that planting can be carried out at any time of the year, provided they are watered in periods of drought, compared to bare-root plants which can only be planted during the plants normal dormant period (November to March).  All of these trees are UK grown, which is important for successful establishment.

How many willow hedging trees do I need?

We recommend planting 6 plants per metre, so this pack of 500 trees will cover a distance of 83m.   This is called a double staggered row hedge and makes a very effective screen. How this works is that first you mark out your where your hedge is going. Use a tape measure and make a mark at every metre spot, spray paint is a good idea. Plant one willow tree at each metre point. When this is complete, plant an additional two trees in between the first ones. In doing this you have three willow per metre. The second line of the hedge is really a repeat of the first. Make this approximately 25cm (10in) from the first line. With the second hedge line, simply plant a tree at the mid-point between those in the first.  Combining of colours, we suggest a random mixture of the 6 different willows, giving the best results, however, ensuring that there is a spread of the different colours across a given area.

Mix Your Own Hedge Service:

In addition to our popular mixed native hedging packs, we are able to make up mixtures of any combination of different hedging types for 100 or more trees.  There is such a wide range of types of hedging available, so where to begin.

For example, a mixed hedge consisting of common or green beech with a few purple beech scattered through looks really stunning.  Similarly, a random mixture of green and gold leylandii can be most attractive.  Contact us for more details as we will be able to advise on the suitability of the different hedging types.
