Conference Pear Tree

Conference pears (Pyrus communis 'Conference') are another well-known pear. A sweet and juicy pear, Conference produces very good, reliable crops. Conference pear is also self-fertile, which means there is no need for another pear to be assured your pear crop. The fruits are a medium-sized, yellow-green colour with a browny russet colour over parts of the fruit. We suggest picking in September and the pears are then ready for eating during October and November.

For more information on what the options mean, please see "Choosing the type of Pear tree rootstock" below.

Month of Picking: September

Type of Pear: Eating

Self-fertile/Not self-fertile: This pear is self-fertile so there is no other pear is required for pollination

This pear is in flowering period is C3.

This pear will act as a suitable pollination partner for pears in the flowering periods C2, C3 and C4.

This variety of pear tree is supplied in a 5-12 litre container, which means that the tree can be planted any time of the year and with better results than either bare-root or rootballed trees.

See What Our Customers Are Saying About Our Conference Pear Trees

Evening Alan, So sorry I haven't been in touch to say: Thank you ever so much for the Fruit trees. They arrived safe and sound. Were planted the next day and look great. Thanks also for the advice and guidance! Genuinely appreciated. We'll be in touch with our next project soon :)Best wishes, Nicki 0117

It was via a magazine that I came across your web site. The idiot proof descriptions and instructions on where to plant or not have been great, and not at all scary! I can't fault the service or the quality of conference pear trees that have arrived. Looking forward to many happy years enjoying them (and possibly an apple and a pear too)! 0516

Thanks very much for sending such excellent young pears. Now planets and thriving. 1114

The order was received when promised, an excellent Conference Pear tree, well packed, the courier obviously a MENSA member, as he left it in a sensible and sheltered place while I was out. I've just ordered another tree, which demonstrates my complete satisfaction! John 0114

Hi Alan, Thanks for the e-mail. Yes, very pleased with the 4 fruit trees which all arrived in one piece, in the right place at the right time. They are now safely growing as cordons against (or rather near) my newly pained back wall. The cardboard from the decent packaging is now on my compost heap. The Prunus Serrula that I bought in August is also flourishing in my front garden. Very pleased with the service, the descriptions and the trees themselves. Regards Pat Dauncey 0913

Fruit Tree Life Expectancy
Most fruit trees will give you AT LEAST 40 years of fruit. Pears can go to 70. Records of 200 year old trees exist but this is the exception, not the rule.

Do I Need To Stake My Bare Root Fruit Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Fruit Tree Heights
Taller does not mean more value for money. A 1 year old fruit tree can easily be substantially higher than a 2 year old, this is because they are hard pruned at 1 year old to create the desired shape. Some trees have over 100cm of height removed. They can then have another pruning at 2 years old to increase fruit growing real estate. Most fruit trees will benefit from having a third to half of the seasons new growth cut back in the Autumn to prevent long whippy branches which break easily. Age and pruning completed determine real value.

Choosing the type of Pear tree rootstock:

Those in the horticultural business love their technical lingo, so here is something to help you decipher Gobbeldy Gook from the Green Fingered Brigade. Each rootstock description is made up of several terms from one or more of the following:

Generic : A standard or new rootstock growing 3-4m on average. 5-9L pot, 2-3 years old.
Cordon            :  Columnar shape and short branches. Ideal for space saving and quick fruiting (possibly first year)
Quince C         :  Will reach approx. 2.5 metres. Fruits quicker than Quince A
Quince Eline Almost identical to Quince C but but has superior cold hardiness.
Quince A         :  Will reach approx. 3.5 metres. Fruits quicker than Kirchensellar and is supplied at 120-180cm tall.
Quince A + Will reach approx. 3.5 metres but is supplied at 180-240cm tall.
Kirchensaller:  Will reach approx. 6.0+ metres.
Half Standard: Trunk clear of branches for around 1 metre and is traditional tree shaped. Good for gardens e.g. easy mowing and companion planting underneath.
Straight Lead: Much more of a clear trunk than a Half Standard, usually around 2.0 + metres.
Bush            : Pruned so that branches start around 45cm from the ground.
Maiden            : 1-2 years old and unpruned, ideal for shaping into Fan, Espalier etc
