Maritime Pine (Pinus Pinaster)
Maritime Pine is an evergreen conifer with a long clear trunk, open crown and fast growing which thrives in cool, wet winters and hot dry Summers which means the UK definitely has a lot to offer with one of those seasons. Southern UK and coastal sites offer the best climates. Could start to fail at temperatures around minus 18 degrees centigrade.
Planted since the early 1600'sin the UK as a commercial timber source and performs particularly well near water courses and acidic soil at altitudes of 600m or less although instances of 2000m near Morocco have been recorded. Considered a pioneer species which means on previously poor sites where little grew, this would take hold and perform well. Does not perform well with Peat, alkaline or wet clay soils.
Considered a medium sized tree that can reach heights of around 35m and is widely planted in ornamental parks and in optimal conditions would grow faster than Corsican Pine. A good resistance to insect attack due to its ability to release oleoresins.
As with many conifers, the bark is an orange/red with thick with deep fissures or cracks and the needles are the longest of all European pine trees reaching lengths of around 25cm. The cones will be up to 20cm long and around 6cm wide.

Feeding Or Fertilizing Hedges
This is a task that can easily be over done. Any nitrogen based fertilizer will do such as 20:20:10 but the longer lasting ones which take 18/24 months are better as they are regulated by the weather and moisture therefore release slowly.
If you are one of those lucky people that lead an eco lifestyle (VERY jealous if you are) and want to buy trees to burn, then maybe our wood burning chart (excel spread sheet) will help you decide. Ash, Eucalyptus Gunnii and Willow are worth looking at for their growth rates and calorific values.
If you are looking to plant lots of plug plant or cell grown trees (the 10-40cm-ish) size range then maybe you should consider our tree planting tool. Tree planting rates of over 700 per day achievable.
Adding A Bit Of Colour And Attract Wildlife
Honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum) is very attractive, fragrant and attracts more wildlife to your garden. A bit on the vigorous side but worth the effort. A great addition to your project.
Broadleaf wood planting would be around 3m between each tree. Christmas tree planting for a commercial crop is around 1m.
Factors Detrimental To Cell Grown Trees
Too much/little water, animal Urine, excessive wind exposure (will slow growth), salt spray, frost on new growth, herbicide drift and over application of fertilizer.
