The Violet Willow (Salix Daphnoides) can reach a final height of 6-8m sometimes 12m. The bark of this willow is smooth and grey and has long purple-violet shoots and white bloom which can be seen from February to March with seeds ripening from May to June. The flowers are dioecious meaning the flowers are either male or female so if you want to create seed you obviously need both (We think sex education is genetically passed on so need to contact the local education authorities to arrange the local primary school to educate your trees).
These trees are not self fertile and so you will be reliant upon Mother Nature to complete her magic in the form of bees, birds, moths etc to pollinate.
Violet Willow is one of the easiest going, laid back trees willing (no pun intended) to grow in light (sandy) medium (loamy) or heavy (clay) soils with acid or neutral soils presenting no problem. For best results plant in deep damp heavy soil. Shade is about the only thing you should keep it away from (so no planting behind Eamon Holmes or the path into the local weight watchers club). A very chalky environment will not give you good results.
One year old stems are very flexible and used in basket weaving. If you require poles, leave the tree for two years and then coppice (harvest).
Violet Willow is very good for planting in costal locations as it can stand the environment and the root system is excellent for stabilising sand dunes. This advantage can turn against you as the vigorous root system can also cause problems with drains so do not plant within 10 metres of a building.
This particular tree has been used to make a bitter flour in times of famine. Bio Energy and Sustainable Energy Willow and Poplar are increasingly being used, at the moment on a small scale, in the creation of a sustainable source of fuel. Rabbit and Deer Protection We offer a range of tree shelters that will protect your trees against possible attack. Click on this Tree Protection Link and it will take you to all of these products. Benefits of using our plug plant trees Our trees are sold as plug plants, in other words the roots are encased in compost. This means that planting can be carried out at any time of the year, provided they are watered in periods of drought, compared to bare-root plants which can only be planted during the plants normal dormant period (November to March). All of these trees are UK grown, which is important for successful establishment. Wholesale Tree Prices We will be more than happy to provide quotations on the supply of quantities of 500 or more trees. Please email us at info@trees-online.co.uk
Bio Fuels If you are one of those lucky people that lead an eco lifestyle (VERY jealous if you are) and want to buy trees to burn, then maybe our wood burning chart (excel spread sheet) will help you decide. Ash, Eucalyptus Gunnii and Willow are worth looking at for their growth rates and calorific values. Planting tool If you are looking to plant lots of plug plant or cell grown trees (the 10-40cm-ish) size range then maybe you should consider our tree planting tool. Tree planting rates of over 700 per day achievable.
Canker Canker can show itself in the form of black leaves and bark, almost looking like they have been burnt. This is something transmitted by the weather, birds and animals etc and affects thin barked trees in particular. It can get it through wounds to the tree and there is no effective treatment other than cutting the diseased part out and allowing the tree to grow again. Keeping the tree healthy in the first few years will help the tree fight off infection so fertilise and control weed infestation.
