Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) is a fast-growing hedging species, making between 45cm (1ft 6in) and 60cm (2ft) of height growth per year. It produces a dense, evergreen hedge. Its leaves are a mid-dark green colour and have an aromatic scent when crushed. Western Red Cedar is also noted for its small cones. Considered a worthy alternative to Leylandii and a good choice for those wanting something a little different, whilst still providing a dense, evergreen screening hedge. We recommend Western Red Cedar is trimmed during late Summer and early Autumn. Western Red Cedar is quite at home in either sun or shade and prefers a well-drained soil type.

Our Western Red Cedar hedging trees are sold as plug plants, in other words the roots are encased in compost. This means that planting can be carried out at any time of the year, provided they are watered in periods of drought, compared to bare-root plants which can only be planted during the plants normal dormant period (November to March). How many Western Red Cedar hedging trees do I need?
We recommend planting 4 plants per metre, so this pack of 40 trees will cover a distance of 10m. This is called a double staggered row hedge and makes a very effective screen. How this works is that first you mark out your where your hedge is going. Use a tape measure and make a mark at every metre spot, spray paint is a good idea. Plant one Western Red Cedar plant at each metre point. When this is complete, plant an additional Western Red Cedar in between the first ones. In doing this you have two trees per metre. The second line of the hedge is really a repeat of the first. Make this approximately 25cm (10in) from the first line. With the second hedge line, simply plant a Western Red Cedar tree at the mid-point between those in the first.
