The Tibetan Cherry Tree (Prunus Serrula) is easily recognised for its polished mahogany coloured bark. This bark, falls off in strips as the tree ages. One of our best selling ornamental trees, this tree is a magnificent point of interest in a garden, particularly during winter. The bark maintains its colour and shine, almost as if it has been polished throughout the year. This tree produces, small, white flowers which are almost totally hidden by willow-type leaves in spring, immediately followed by small, cherry fruits. Expect the tree to be at around 4m high at 10 years old so this would be considered a small tree.

Our Tibetan Cherry Tree is supplied at a height of between 150cm and 240cm in a 7-20 Litre container, which means that the tree can be planted any time of the year and with better results than either bare-root or rootballed trees.

Prunus Serrula Tibetica, Tibetan Cherry Options Explained

120-180 cm : Supplied in a 5-9 Litre container, 2-3 years old.
150-180cm: Supplied in a 7-15L container, 2-3 years old. Half standard.
180-240cm: Supplied in a 12-18L container and 2-3 years old. Single Stem/Half Standard.
Multistem : Supplied in a 7-15 Litre container, 2-4 years old, 100+cm tall

The height range of the Tibetan Cherry tree is quite large because the size you get is dependent upon many variables. Obvious ones such as weather conditions at the nursery, time of the year you buy etc determine where in the height range you receive. The not so obvious ones are stubborn cherry trees that just refuse to grow because there is a personality clash between them and the nurseryman. As you can see, the World of Tibetan Cherry trees is not a simple and straightforward one.

Unless otherwise indicated e.g. Multi-Stem, you will receive a Tibetan Cherry that will be a Half Standard i.e. there will be a clear stem underneath the side branches. A multi-stem has branches that start lower to the ground.

Message card included at no additional cost if required. Just add the information required on the card at checkout.

See What Our Customers Are Saying About Prunus Serrula

Hi, Sorry for the delay in response. Our tree arrived safe and well. We are really happy with its form, it is now a lovely centrepiece to our small garden. It has also survived a very stormy night with just a few wind-scorched leaves. Thank you Joanne 0618

Received 2 x prunus serrula last week from you and we love them - thanks! Best wishes, Leigh 0917

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.

Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.

Fruit On Ornamental Cherry Trees
If any fruits are formed, they will be small, inedible and barely noticeable.
