Kumoi Asian Pears (Pyrus Domestica Kumoi) provide excellent eating pears and very interesting ornamental properties to add eye-pleasing aesthetics to any garden.

This fruit tree is SELF FERTILE which means it will provide fruit without the need for another pollinator. In plain English, plant it where you like, it will provide fruit although close proximity to some secret Government labs may influence your results!

Asian Pears combine the distinct flavour of pears with the crispiness of apples. If you leave them to massively over ripen then you have the advantage of peach softness and if you leave them longer still then you have the benefit of growing your own penicillin. A good addition to any fruit salad or even in some stir fry dishes and they make a great present because sellotape sticks well to the skin. Some people find Kumoi Asian pears to be an excellent surprise gift but only if you don't tell the recipient it is coming. If you own chickens then the Kumoi Asian pear tree has some fox deterrent properties in that you can hang a sign on it saying "Foxes Go Away".

We have not had it confirmed legally as of yet but we think that if you grow a Kumoi Asian pear tree against the side of your house then technically (and if you squint hard enough) then you have created a tree house i.e. a structure within the branches of a tree. This would be a compelling argument to pay less council tax.

Our Kumoi Asian Pear trees are supplied approximately 1.25-1.8 metres tall and are supplied on a Pear Seedling rootstock and arrive in bush form. At least that is the aim because if it turns up looking like a self-assembly kit then the couriers have been crap and broken it.

Expect a final height of around 4.0 metres although pruning or restricting the root spread with containers will keep final height lower.

The Kumoi Asian Pears will be ready for eating in September and can be kept in the salad crisper part of your fridge for at least a month, possibly three. Kept at room temperature you can keep for up to 14 days, 2 weeks or half a month, whichever is longest!

Fruit Tree Life Expectancy
Most fruit trees will give you AT LEAST 40 years of fruit. Pears can go to 70. Records of 200 year old trees exist but this is the exception, not the rule.

Do I Need To Stake My Bare Root Fruit Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Fruit Tree Heights
Taller does not mean more value for money. A 1 year old fruit tree can easily be substantially higher than a 2 year old, this is because they are hard pruned at 1 year old to create the desired shape. Some trees have over 100cm of height removed. They can then have another pruning at 2 years old to increase fruit growing real estate. Most fruit trees will benefit from having a third to half of the seasons new growth cut back in the Autumn to prevent long whippy branches which break easily. Age and pruning completed determine real value.
