Generic: Usually a St Julien A which grows to around 3.5m at maturity however they can be supplied on slightly different rootstocks giving a similar height.
St Julian A Half Standard: Grows to about 3.5 metres at maturity. More of a lollipop shape with a clear stem/trunk of around 1m. Traditional garden tree as it allows easy mowing or companion planting underneath. St Julian A: Grows to about 3.5 metres at maturity. Same mature height as a Half Standard but more bush shaped with around 45cm clear stem/trunk. Pruned to provide a balanced and shaped head and provide slightly more fruit than a half standard.
Pixy/VVA1: Grows to about 3 metres at maturity and is more of a bush shape with around 45cm clear stem/trunk. In summary, same as above just smaller.

Important Damson Fruit Tree information
All our Damson fruit trees are grown and delivered in their pots which means you have the benefit of being able to plant them ALL YEAR ROUND. Leaving them in their pots outside over winter (October to March) may kill them unless you use a warm conservatory or greenhouse. We advise planting as soon as you receive them unless there is a frost.

Merryweather Damson Fruit Tree

Merryweather (Prunus domestica 'Merryweather'), introduced in 1907, is an extremely versatile damson providing copious volumes of plum-type fruits identifiable by their purple-blue-black skin and marvellous, juicy yellow flesh. Furthermore, Merryweather has a strong, acid flavour which makes it very valuable for cooking purposes. This damson is reasonably self-fertile, however, to be assured success, we recommend another plum is planted close.

Supplied at about 1.25 metres to 1.75 metres in the 12 Litre version, slightly smaller for the 3 litre Maiden pot size which is supplied in a 3 litre container.

Please select from the drop down menu below which rootstock you want or tell us at checkout.

Month of Picking: Late-September

Type of Damson: Eating/Cooking

Self-fertile/Not self-fertile: This damson is self-fertile so there is no need for another damson for pollination

This damson is in flowering period is C3.

Merryweather will be suitable to act as a pollination partner for damsons in the flowering periods C2, C3 and C4.

This variety of damson tree is supplied in a container, which means that the tree can be planted any time of the year and with better results than either bare-root or rootballed trees.

January 2014: It arrived in good time, in good condition and well packed - a very nice Merryweather tree, now planted. Excellent service. John

October 2013: Hi Alan, A tree has just arrived and it looks really good. It appears to have no label, but I look forward to it bearing loads of damsons in due course. Many thanks for your service. I am impressed by the quality of both trees and shall plant them in the next two or three days. Have a great weekend. John Sandeman

Fruit Tree Life Expectancy
Most fruit trees will give you AT LEAST 40 years of fruit. Pears can go to 70. Records of 200 year old trees exist but this is the exception, not the rule.

Do I Need To Stake My Bare Root Fruit Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Fruit Tree Heights
Taller does not mean more value for money. A 1 year old fruit tree can easily be substantially higher than a 2 year old, this is because they are hard pruned at 1 year old to create the desired shape. Some trees have over 100cm of height removed. They can then have another pruning at 2 years old to increase fruit growing real estate. Most fruit trees will benefit from having a third to half of the seasons new growth cut back in the Autumn to prevent long whippy branches which break easily. Age and pruning completed determine real value.
