What Is A Duo Apple Tree?
It is an apple tree whereby two apple trees are grafted onto one stem at an early age. It grows as a normal tree but you get the benefits of two trees for the price of one e.g. two different species of apple.

Worcester Pearmain (C3) And Fiesta (C3) Bare Root Duo Apple Tree
A great choice of Duo apple tree is you are looking for tasty and can grow anywhere in the UK. They will cross pollinate each other, both easy to grow, and low instances of disease. The short storage time of the Worcester Pearmain is the only downside but the taste more than makes up for that.

Worcester Pearmain
Such a great tree, the RHS gave it their Award Of Garden Merit and it is easy to see why. Comparatively trouble free, suitable for planting almost anywhere in the UK, good pollinator and good for eating and juicing.

The taste has been described as strong hints of strawberry by an apple enthusiast and very nice by some normal bloke with better things to be doing. The longer and hotter the Summer, the more of a strawberry taste you will experience. The different taste has made it a popular choice in UK gardens.

The great taste makes it worthwhile growing but the apples do not last that long. Pick in September and expect to store them until October.

Fiesta
Another outstanding tree with the RHS Award Of Garden Merit. Considered to be more disease and pest free than most other apple trees, suitable for growing almost anywhere in the UK, great for pollinating other apple trees and suitable for container growing.

Pick in October and should store well until January and should be good for juicing too.

Originating in the East Malling Research Centre by Dr Frank Alston in 1972. No need to be alarmed at the words research and Frank in the same sentence, the tree will not come alive and cause problems with the neighbours.

What Will Be Delivered?
The Duo apple trees are grafted onto MM106 rootstock giving a mature height of around 3.5m. They will be 1 year old maidens and will be in the region of 100 to 150 cm tall. If new to gardening, you will need to research "pruning maiden apple trees".

The Benefits Of Duo Apple Trees.

Each species is usually chosen to compliment the other e.g with pollination, taste etc. It offers more variety in less space and reduced risk of a complete harvest failure. If the harvest times are staggered then it also means you have a longer period of fresh apples. If you have other apple trees then a Duo apple tree with 2 different flowering times .e.g a group 2 and 3 or a 3 and 4,  offer pollen for longer to those other trees which should increase apple harvest yields. Finally,  2 apple trees for the price of 1!.

Manchester And Below
Commercial apple orchards seem to thin out drastically once you go past Manchester. We have used this as a VERY rough guideline to establish where the cut off point is for sun hungry apple trees. You can still grow them North of there but best results become more unlikely. For a more accurate picture, have a look at a UK map of average sun hours.

Do I Need To Stake My Bare Root Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.
