All our bare root Blenheim Orange Apple trees are good for eating, storing and cooking and is considered by many to be one of, if not the best dual purpose apple. We tried to locate "many" to confirm this observation but directory enquiries had no listing, Yell.com returned a "no results" page and asking random people in the high street got us escorted out of the area. The apples are large with a nutty taste and a crumbly texture and are good for cooking and eating. The RHS though this tree was that good, they gave it the Award of Garden Merit. This should have been because of its outstanding characteristics and not because it bribed someone on the board!

The Blenheim Orange apple tree is good for growing in containers, by that we mean suitable tree containers not margarine tubs, grandads old slippers and the bath.

Most important information

Month Of Fruiting: Early October and they will keep until January.
Type Of Apple:
Eating and cooking
Fertility: (C3) TRIPLOID NOT SELF-FERTILE. Requires 2 other apple trees in group C2,C3 or C4 close by to produce fruit. Ideally purchase a self-fertile apple tree in pollination group C3 e.g Red Falstaff.
Tip Bearing: This means that all the fruits are found at the end of each branch, so don't go cutting them off unless you have to.

It cooks well to make an Apple Charlotte. We had no idea who Charlotte was, is or what it could be so according to our research it is food! Below is the recipe:

Apple charlotte Ingredients (stuff you will need)

  • 1kg/2¼ lb cooking apples, peeled, cored (the chewy leathery bits in the middle removed) and sliced.
  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2-3 tbsp light brown soft sugar (or hard sugar in touch with its feminine side)
  • 50g/2oz butter, melted, plus a bit extra for greasing and flicking at the kids as they run past.
  • 8-10 slices quality kid friendly brown bread (crusts removed)

Apple Charlotte Preparation

1. Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5.

2. Get a heavy based saucepan, practice a few tennis serves with it or put it on your head and pretend to be a helmet wearing soldier firing at aliens. Everything after get a heavy based saucepan is only essential if you have kids around or never mentally passed 12 years old.

3. Put the apples, sugar, cinnamon, lemon zest and juice into the tennis racket/helmet and pretend it is a saucepan for a minute. If you don't know what zest is, it is the outer skin of the lemon without the white stuff (pith) attached to it. A potato peeler is good for removing the zest but angle it so that minimal pith is removed. Do not be sarcastic while removing the white stuff otherwise this is "taking the pith".

4. Place on a medium heat (we presume that is a temperature setting and not ability to talk to the deceased). Cover with the lid and bring to a simmer. Stir regularly until the apples break down (go mushy not start crying)

5. Remove the lid and turn up the heat to high. Beat the apples like you just found them vandalising your pride and joy until the liquid has evaporated and you have formed a puree or for the simple ones amongst us, a paste.

6. Which ever way you choose, the bread needs melted butter on both sides. Throwing frisbee style is more fun, less accurate, at the melted butter container.

7.Lightly smear butter into a 15cm or 6inch (which ever is bigger) diameter cake tin and cover the base and sides with 3/4, 75% or a big chunk of the bread. Ensure there are no gaps in between the slices and make the sides come up a little bit over the top.

8.Put the paste, puree, Ecto-plasm or contents of your helmet/tennis racket over the bread and cover with the rest of the bread making sure there are no gaps.

9.Turn or fold down the bread lining the sides of the tin and press down onto the bread on top to make a lid.

10. Bake for 30 minutes, half an hour or until golden-brown.

Fruit Tree Life Expectancy
Most fruit trees will give you AT LEAST 40 years of fruit. Pears can go to 70. Records of 200 year old trees exist but this is the exception, not the rule.

Do I Need To Stake My Bare Root Fruit Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Fruit Tree Heights
Taller does not mean more value for money. A 1 year old fruit tree can easily be substantially higher than a 2 year old, this is because they are hard pruned at 1 year old to create the desired shape. Some trees have over 100cm of height removed. They can then have another pruning at 2 years old to increase fruit growing real estate. Most fruit trees will benefit from having a third to half of the seasons new growth cut back in the Autumn to prevent long whippy branches which break easily. Age and pruning completed determine real value.

Apple Tree Jargon Explained

MM106 Grows to a final height of around 3.6 metres. Usually delivered around 120-180cm for 2-3 year tree.
MM106+ Grows to a final height of around 3.6 metres. Usually delivered around 180-240cm for 2-3 year tree.
M9 Grows to a final height of around 2.5 metres. Usually delivered around 120-180cm for 2-3 year tree.
M26 Grows to a final height of around 3.0 metres. Usually delivered around 120-180cm for 2-3 year tree.
M27 Grows to a final height of around 1.5 metres. Usually delivered around 120-180cm for 2-3 year tree.
CORDON Pruned to produce apples very quickly (1-3 years), favoured with commercial growers. More columnar than round shape. Less of a harvest compared to MM106.
BUSH Clear stem of 45cm before branches grow out.
HALF STANDARD Clear stem of 1 m. Conventional tree shape allowing easy grass mowing or companion planting.
MAIDEN 1-2 years old, no pruning or shaping. Blank slate for you to shape and train.
PATIO Shaped to produce compact bush proportional for pot size, ideal for container growing.
(12L), (3L) etc The size of the pot measured in litres.
SELF FERTILE Will produce fruit without another apple tree nearby.
C1,C2,C3,C4,C5 If your apple tree is NOT SELF FERTILE (they will be listed f they are) then you will need a second apple tree nearby of a similar number i.e. the same or one above or one below. So an apple tree from a C3 requires a C2, C3 or C4 planted close by for it to produce fruit. Triploids are an exception, see below.
Bare Root Available from November to March only. Comes with no pot or dirt around roots and is cheaper than potted options. Orders purchased outside this time will be held for delayed delivery until the next season starts.
TRIPLOID You have a selfish tree. It will be pollinated by other trees but the pollen it has to offer is useless. See TRIPLOID POLLINATION for more information.
