Sorbus Olympic Flame
Olympic Flame Sorbus Dodong 'Olympic Flame', hails from Korea. We are not sure which part so look out for signs of antagonistic missile testing and questionable human rights record and that will give you your answer as to North or South.

Considered a stiff tree when young which we assume to be lack of "bendiness" and not rigid, historical Victorian values.

The Olympic Flame is a Columnar tree so expect it to be many times taller than it is wide. The picture of the outline should give you some idea on the left.

The leaves are green to start with and as the seasons march ever forward they change to a Coppery colour followed by a magnificent orange making the Olympic Flame fairly obvious where it got its name. This is definitely a tree to buy if you want to see variation throughout the seasons.

The creamy flowers turn into fruits that are bright orange to red and are not persistent. We took that to mean it didn't keep asking you where the toilet was.

An Olympic Flame will make a great statement to any public place and is recommended as such. If you are looking to plant in parks, create an avenue etc then this is a tree to consider because they are long lived, robust and have a real presence. Due to the Olympic Flames columnar shape it makes it particularly suitable for road side planting.

Consider an occasional thinning of the tree to encourage fresh growth. Especially prune out diseased, dead or crossing over branches (they rub the bark off and allow infection to get in)

Coastal and wet conditions will not bother the Olympic Flame too much however we suggest making sure your point of planting is clear of ocean for at least a day! Could be embarrassing waving good bye to your tree as it floats off to America, Ireland, France etc.

Apparently it prefers acid soil to neutral. Emptying your car battery at the base of the tree is unlikely to help it grow any more and would definitely inhibit your ability to get to work (we do get some people ask us some very strange questions!)

Should you live in a clay quarry and need a bit of colour then this is a good choice as it is clay tolerant. Despite being tolerant of clay, mixing some well rotted organic matter into the hole when you plant will help it.

Find a full or partial sun position for it and it will grow nicely. Next to the sun bed is unlikely to get you any benefits.

Unlike Jim Davidson, this will actually attract the birds to your location because of the berries which can also be used to make jelies etc.

Considered a medium height tree which in tree circles means it will be around 4 metres at 10 years although could go on to grow some more depending on local conditions, weather, low flying helicopters, hedge trimmer happy neighbours etc but should not be much more than that.

Message card included at no additional cost if required. Just add the information required on the card at checkout.

Olympic Flame Pot Sizes
The cheaper and smaller potted option will be roughly 100-150cm tall and in a 5-10 litre pot. Height will depend on time of year purchased, recent weather and if the nursery man/woman/person/robot sneezed when pruning.

The larger pot sizes, usually 10-15 Litres, will be roughly 150-200cm

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.

Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.
