Japanese Maple Acer Palmatum Katsura
Japanese Maple Acer Palmatum Katsura is very similar to Orange Dream. They have the same open vase shape (multi-stemmed shrub), are a small tree growing to around 4m after 10 years, possibly growing up to 6m and with stunning Autumn colours. Expect a spread of 2-4m but this is very difficult to predict. Ideal for highly ornamental locations such as courtyards, parks etc and very low maintenance.

The five lobed leaves unfold bright orange/yellow fading to green but retaining orange edges and in the Summer they turn a strong yellow. Autumn colours bring yellows, reds and oranges making the Acer Palmatum Katsura a stunning focal point for any garden. There is that much going on with this tree it is almost more interesting to watch than Coronation Street. The RHS were so impressed with this little stunner they gave it the Award Of Garden Merit. We don't know if there is a formal ceremony for this and if so, how would they get the trees to attend but it has the award all the same.

Can be grown in full sun or partial shade however partial shade could yield better results. Is clay soil and drought tolerant too but avoid excessive chalky environments such as the school stationary cupboard. Should you suffer leaf scorch this could be caused by lack of soil moisture or the obvious too much sun. High wind conditions may decrease your viewing and gardening pleasure, especially if you live in hurricane alley, Scotland, within a wind tunnel and you see your potted Acer take up an unaided flight to France.

The Acer Palmatum Katsura Japanese Maple tree will not benefit from pruning except to remove dead, dying or diseased branches so if you have strong hairdresser tendencies maybe this is not the tree for you.

Should you wish to containerise an Acer Katsura they would be a good choice. The bigger the pot the better otherwise it could have a dwarfing effect on the tree unless this was the desired effect.

As a matter of interest....or not....Katsura means wig.

This Japanese maple tree is supplied at a height of between 0.5m and 1m in a 3-10L container, which means that the tree has a well-established root system and can be planted any time of the year and with better results than either bare-root or rootballed trees.

Message card included at no additional cost if required. Just add the information required on the card at checkout.

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.

Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.
