Golden Sphere Mirabelle or Cherry Plum Tree Options Explained

150-180cm: 12-15L pot. 2-4 years old, bush shape. St Julian A Rootstock.

Golden Sphere Mirabelle or Cherry Plum Tree
Golden Sphere (Prunus insititia 'Golden Sphere') is a large, yellow almost translucent Mirabelle with golden flesh and a yummy, plummy flavour. Partially self fertile.

Other PLUMS that flower early i.e. those in flowering group C1 or C2 will assist in cross pollination. This is posh technical terms used by those in the business that forget that us simple folk have no idea what they are talking about, which means that you get more fruit (they could just say that!)

Month of Picking: Early-September

Type of Mirabelle: Eating/Cooking

Self-fertile/Not self-fertile: This Mirabelle is partially self-fertile. Another pollination partner is advised especially if living more than a mile away from other Mirabelle trees if you want the best possible chance of the tree fruiting.

This Mirabelle is in flowering period is C1.

Golden Sphere will be suitable to act as a pollination partner for damsons in the flowering periods C1 and C2.

Usually supplied on a St Julian A rootstock and delivered at 120-180cm tall.

Fruit Tree Life Expectancy
Most fruit trees will give you AT LEAST 40 years of fruit. Pears can go to 70. Records of 200 year old trees exist but this is the exception, not the rule.

Do I Need To Stake My Bare Root Fruit Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Fruit Tree Heights
Taller does not mean more value for money. A 1 year old fruit tree can easily be substantially higher than a 2 year old, this is because they are hard pruned at 1 year old to create the desired shape. Some trees have over 100cm of height removed. They can then have another pruning at 2 years old to increase fruit growing real estate. Most fruit trees will benefit from having a third to half of the seasons new growth cut back in the Autumn to prevent long whippy branches which break easily. Age and pruning completed determine real value.

Important Mirabelle Fruit Tree information
Just like many other stone fruits such as Plum, Damsons and Gages, Mirabelle fruit trees do not winter (Oct to Mar) very well if left in their containers outside. The smaller thermal mass and faster drying out issues of a small container can generate problems for the tree to include absence of life or death or just not playing anymore depending on how you want to look at it. If you want to keep the Mirabelle tree in a container, we advise moving to a conservatory or greenhouse.

Plum Tree Pollination
Technically speaking it is possible to use plum trees to pollinate Mirabelle plum trees but has more risk than using another Mirabelle plum tree. If the Mirabelle is self-fertile, this of course is not an issue.
