Pseudoplantanus Variegatum Simon Louis Freres Options Explained

150-180cm :
7-12L pot, 2-3 years old, Half Standard.
180-240cm: 9-15L: pot, 2-3 years old, Half Standard.

A dramatic variety of sycamore, Simon Louis-Freres is notable for its very beautiful variegated young leaves, marked creamy-white and pink. Its older foliage turns a pale green with somewhat irregular markings with the end result of creating a very pleasing brick red.

Ideal for a park or large garden, expect this tree to reach a height of around 6m tall and 5m wide at 10 years but could go on to grow to around 15m tall and 8m wide.

Considered to be a slow growing tree that attracts birds and wildlife to your garden.

Simon Louis-Freres is supplied at a height of between 1.5 and 2.5 metres in a 7-12L container, which means that the tree has an already established root system and therefore this tree can be planted any time of the year and with better results than either bare-root or rootballed trees.

If you require many Maple trees then click WHOLESALE MAPLE TREES . These are 40cm to 60cm tall.

Planting Simon-Louis Freres Sycamore Tree

This Acer is considered chalk and clay tolerant but you may want to break up particularly heavy clay with some well rotted manure or compost to a ratio of 50:50. Suitable for exposed and coastal locations so plant one of these close to your secret Naval base to make it easier for lost Submarine Captains to find you. Plant in a sheltered full sun position for best results although it will tolerate some shade. Your average garden with fences, hedges or surrounding houses would be considered a sheltered spot.

A very hardy tree for the UK as it will tolerate temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees centigrade.

Pruning Simon-Louis Freres Sycamore Tree

Unusually for a Maple tree, you can hard prune these at any time without causing any long term damage to the tree.

Pseudoplantanus Variegatum Simon Louis Freres Reversion
All variegated trees can suffer with reversion. This is where foliage appears without the dual colour or markings and these should be pruned out completely. This is because the none variegated foliage is more vigorous and can eventually take over the tree.

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.

Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.
