Brilliant autumn colour is reason enough to plant a black gum tree. Nyssa sylvatica develops an elegant, broadly conical crown, and you can choose from younger plants, large potted trees and mature ornamental trees for gardens, avenues and larger landscapes.
Also known as a sour gum tree or pepperidge tree, it has glossy green leaves that can turn yellow, orange, scarlet and purple in autumn. A Nyssa tree also offers a graceful canopy, low maintenance, good tolerance of moist ground and, where fruit forms, small dark berries for birds. Different tupelo tree varieties include narrower and broader forms, making it easier to find the right shape without losing the outstanding autumn display.
