Yew trees are long-lived native evergreens that tolerate shade and respond well to clipping. Small yew trees are easier to position before they develop dense growth, while yew seedlings can be grown on for year-round cover and wildlife shelter. Female plants may later produce red arils eaten by birds, but the foliage and seeds are poisonous.
