Charles Ross Apple Tree (BARE ROOT)
Our bare root Charles Ross eating apple tree is a good old fashioned easy to grow tree. Not because it wears flat caps and talks about the good old steam age but because it comes from the late Victorian era. Apparently it's parents were Cox's Orange Pippin and an older cooking apple called Peasgood Nonsuch but as apples do not come with birth certificates we cannot be truly sure.
For the apple Connoisseur, it has quite a rich, succulent, aromatic taste bud tingling flavour with a hint of the Pyrus genus. For the normal people reading this, it is a sweet apple with a touch of pear.
Although Charles Ross Apple trees are known more for their eating properties, they also make a good cooking apple as it keeps its shape when cooked and they also provide a sizeable harvest.
For those with a small garden/very large window box (you never know!) then the Charles Ross Apple tree will suit container growing which is handy if you are one of those people that likes to move the furniture around all the time as you can do the same thing with your potted apple trees. The basic concept is, the smaller the pot the less the tree will grow and the smaller the root stock you buy the smaller the pot you will need! There are no hard and fast rules regarding pot size to height achieved that we can find but generally speaking bigger is better as the roots can spread and it holds water better. Also the extra weight means less likely to blow over.

Usually air and light is reduced and if it is a corner with a wooden fence and the house then leeching from both could compound issues. Try to avoid.
1 Year Maiden Bare Root Trees
If you plant a 1 Year maiden tree and do not prune it at all, it will grow a little more upright and have more clear stem.

Apple Tree Ages and heights
All our apple trees have been pruned and shaped to get the best results and are inspected by an apple tree expert before being sent to you. Maiden apple trees are 1-2 years old, the rest are 2-3 years old. Heights vary depending on root stock however 1.5 to 2+ metres tall is an average apple tree height at delivery.
Bareroot Season
All bare root plants need to be planted between November and March whereas our containerised apple trees can be planted all year round. Fruit Tree Life Expectancy
Most fruit trees will give you AT LEAST 40 years of fruit. Pears can go to 70. Records of 200 year old trees exist but this is the exception, not the rule.
