Mojo Berry Mulberry Tree Options Explained
150-180cm: 2-3 years old, 11.5L container, Half Standard. Lollipop shaped with around 80-100cm clear stem.
Mojo Berry Mulberry Tree
Mojo Berry is a compact dwarf mulberry tree, ideal for customers who want the flavour and novelty of home-grown mulberries but do not have room for a large traditional tree. It is also useful for smaller gardens and patio/pot growing, where a full-size mulberry tree would be too large.
Unlike many traditional mulberries, Mojo Berry can fruit on both old and new wood. This helps it crop from a younger age and can give a longer picking season in good conditions. It produces small white flowers in late spring followed by berries that ripen from red to glossy black. The fruit can be eaten fresh or used in jams, cakes, puddings and sauces.
Mojo Berry is self-fertile, so you do not need a second mulberry tree nearby to get fruit.
Planting Mojo Berry Mulberry
Plant Mojo Berry Mulberry in a sunny, sheltered position in fertile, free-draining soil. Because this is a compact mulberry, it can also be grown in a large patio container, provided the pot has good drainage and the tree is watered regularly in dry weather. We are often asked what size pot to use, and the best reply we have is: "the larger the pot, the smaller the problems". Drying out and feeding are less of an issue for larger pots. The RHS guideline is a container ideally 50cm wide and deep.
Use a good quality loam-based compost for container growing and avoid letting the compost dry out completely during the growing season. In the ground, choose a warm position away from cold winds for the best fruiting results.
Pruning Mojo Berry Mulberry
Mojo Berry needs less pruning than a vigorous mulberry tree, but it still benefits from light tidying. Prune in late autumn or early winter while dormant, removing dead, damaged or crossing shoots and keeping the head neat.
If grown in a pot, light pruning can help keep the tree compact and easy to manage. Avoid heavy cutting, especially during active growth, as mulberries can bleed sap and are better shaped gradually.
Allegedly Interesting Information About Mojo Berry Mulberry
Mojo Berry Mulberry is also sold as Charlotte Russe and Morus 'Matsunaga'. It won RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year in 2017, which is not bad for a mulberry that looks as though someone put a normal tree through the washing machine and shrank it. The clever bit is that Mojo Berry fruits on both old and new wood, so it can crop much younger than traditional mulberries and over a longer season.
