Family Apple Tree (Bramley 20, Christmas Pippin and Scrumptious)
Enjoy three different apple varieties from one tree with this Family Apple Tree, combining Bramley 20, Christmas Pippin and Scrumptious. Each variety is grafted onto the same rootstock, giving you both cooking and dessert apples from one tree without needing space for three separate apple trees.
Scrumptious starts the season in September with attractive red dessert apples. The fruit has a sweet, fragrant, honeyed flavour and Scrumptious is also self-fertile, making it a particularly useful and reliable variety to have on a family tree.
Christmas Pippin follows in mid-autumn, producing crisp, juicy and sweet dessert apples with creamy, aromatic flesh. The fruit stores well until around Christmas, extending your supply of home-grown eating apples into winter.
Bramley 20 provides the cooking apples. It produces large, sharp-flavoured apples that cook down to a well-flavoured, cream-coloured puree, making them ideal for pies, crumbles, sauces and other cooked dishes. Bramley 20 is around 20% less vigorous than the original Bramley’s Seedling while retaining its excellent cooking qualities, and the fruit can be stored into early spring.
The combination also works well for pollination. Scrumptious and Christmas Pippin have compatible flowering periods and provide the pollination required by Bramley 20. Bramley 20 itself is triploid and is not an effective pollinator for the other varieties.
Together, the three varieties provide a long apple season from September into early spring. Scrumptious gives you an early dessert crop, Christmas Pippin follows through autumn and stores towards Christmas, while Bramley 20 provides cooking apples from mid-autumn that can be stored well into the following year.
Our Family Apple Trees are supplied on semi-vigorous MM106 rootstock, producing a manageable tree of approximately 3.6 metres in height. This makes them an excellent choice for gardeners who want a useful range of cooking and eating apples but only have room for one tree.
All our apple trees have been pruned and shaped to get the best results and are inspected by an apple tree expert before being sent to you. Maiden apple trees are 1-2 years old, the rest are 2-3 years old. Heights vary depending on root stock however 1.5 to 2+ metres tall is an average apple tree height at delivery.
