Family Pear Tree (Conference, Concorde and Comice)

Enjoy three different pear varieties from one tree with this unusual Family Pear Tree, combining Conference, Concorde and Doyenné du Comice on a single rootstock. Each variety is grafted onto the same tree, giving you three different flavours and textures without needing space for three separate pear trees.

Conference is a particularly reliable and heavy-cropping pear, producing long, narrow fruits with sweet, juicy, fine-textured flesh. It also has the advantage of being able to set some fruit without pollination, although cropping is generally improved by a compatible pollinating partner.

Concorde is another reliable dessert pear and is known for starting to fruit relatively quickly. Its juicy fruit has an excellent eating quality, while its naturally compact growth makes it particularly useful where garden space is limited.

Doyenné du Comice gives you a distinctly different pear and is especially valued for the quality of its fruit. The large dessert pears have very juicy, buttery, melting flesh with a rich, perfumed flavour, making Comice one of the highlights of the later pear season.

The three varieties also provide good pollination compatibility with one another, helping to support reliable fruit production.

You can expect an extended pear harvest from late September through to December. Conference begins the harvest period, Concorde follows through autumn, and Doyenné du Comice extends the eating season later into the year. As pears are normally picked while still firm and allowed to finish ripening off the tree, the three varieties provide a useful spread of fruit rather than one short glut.

Our Family Pear Trees are supplied as bush-trained trees in 12-litre containers on Quince A rootstock. This produces a manageable mature tree of around 3.5 metres tall, making it suitable for many medium-sized gardens while still providing a generous crop.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden

Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. Corners of houses and fences can also suffer leaching issues so we advise against it.

Fruit Tree Rootstocks Explained Increase Fruit Harvest Size

Choosing the type of Pear tree rootstock:

Those in the horticultural business love their technical lingo, so here is something to help you decipher Gobbeldy Gook from the Green Fingered Brigade. Each rootstock description is made up of several terms from one or more of the following:

Generic : A standard or new rootstock growing 3-4m on average. 5-9L pot, 2-3 years old.
Cordon            :  Columnar shape and short branches. Ideal for space saving and quick fruiting (possibly first year)
Quince C         :  Will reach approx. 2.5 metres. Fruits quicker than Quince A
Quince Eline : Almost identical to Quince C but but has superior cold hardiness.
Quince A         :  Will reach approx. 3.5 metres. Fruits quicker than Kirchensellar and is supplied at 120-180cm tall.
Quince A + : Will reach approx. 3.5 metres but is supplied at 180-240cm tall.
Kirchensaller:  Will reach approx. 6.0+ metres.
Half Standard: Trunk clear of branches for around 1 metre and is traditional tree shaped. Good for gardens e.g. easy mowing and companion planting underneath.
Straight Lead: Much more of a clear trunk than a Half Standard, usually around 2.0 + metres.
Bush            : Pruned so that branches start around 45cm from the ground.
Maiden            : 1-2 years old and unpruned, ideal for shaping into Fan, Espalier etc
