Regal Sweet Chestnut Tree

Regal is the clearest compact choice in this sweet chestnut range. It is described as more compact than other sweet chestnuts, reaching approximately 5m after ten years. It has glossy green leaves, fragrant summer blossom and brown edible nuts that ripen during October. Regal gives buyers the impressive foliage, catkins and nut crop of a sweet chestnut without the particularly vigorous early growth of larger varieties. [1] [2]The nuts ripen in October and can be roasted, boiled or used in savoury and sweet recipes

Regal can also begin producing nuts relatively quickly, with UK growing guides suggesting that cropping may start around two to three years after planting. Its restrained growth and attractive summer display make it particularly useful where both edible nuts and ornamental value are wanted. [2] [3]

Pollination: Regal is described by several UK growing guides as self-fertile, so one tree can produce sweet chestnuts by itself and a second pollination partner is not essential. [2] [3]

Planting Regal Sweet Chestnut Tree

Plant Regal in full sun on freely draining, acid-to-neutral soil. Lighter loam or sandy ground is particularly suitable. Avoid chalky soil and anywhere that remains waterlogged, as wet ground restricts oxygen around the roots and can encourage ink disease. [1] [5]

Regal is more manageable than most sweet chestnuts, but the stated 5m height is its approximate size after ten years rather than a final limit. Allow room for the tree to continue developing beyond that point. Where another relatively restrained chestnut is being considered, see Marron de Lyon. [1]

Dig a planting hole no deeper than the root system but considerably wider. Position the first structural roots at approximately finished soil level, backfill carefully, firm gently and water thoroughly. Keep grass and weeds away from the root area, apply mulch while leaving a clear gap around the trunk and water during dry periods while the tree establishes. [6]

Other Interesting Information About Regal Tree

Regal is an accepted cultivar of European sweet chestnut, Castanea sativa. Its long, toothed leaves and summer catkins give it the unmistakable appearance of a traditional sweet chestnut, while its slower early growth makes it easier to accommodate in a large garden. [4] [5]

Gather them promptly as they fall and the prickly husks begin to open, both to obtain them at their freshest and to reduce losses to squirrels and other wildlife. [1] [3]

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden

Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. Corners of houses and fences can also suffer leaching issues so we advise against it.
