This is an interesting small, native shrub. Alder Buckthorn is confusingly known by two latin names, Rhamnus frangula or Frangula alnus. It is generally found in parts of Britain, however, not Scotland. It prefers moist ground, for example, riverside or riparian areas and is often associated with Alder, forming the underlayer. Alder Buckthorn would work as part of a hedging mixture. Identifiable by its yellowy-green leaves which change to an attractive yellow colour during Autumn. Small white flowers in clusters are followed by little berries which are green initially but when ripe are a dark red colour. Left untrimmed, it will reach a height of approximately 4m (13ft 4in).
Benefits of using our plug plant trees
Our Alder Buckthorn hedging trees are sold as plug plants, in other words the roots are encased in compost. This means that planting can be carried out at any time of the year, provided they are watered in periods of drought, compared to bare-root plants which can only be planted during the plants normal dormant period (November to March). All of these trees are UK grown, which is important for successful establishment.

How many Alder Buckthorn hedging trees do I need?
We recommend planting 6 plants per metre using the double staggered hedge method.
Feeding Or Fertilizing
This is a task that can easily be over done. Any nitrogen based fertilizer will do such as 20:20:10 but the longer lasting ones which take 18/24 months are better as they are regulated by the weather and moisture therefore release slowly.
