Pink Autumn Cherry Tree Description
The award-winning Pink Autumn Cherry Tree, Prunus subhirtella Autumnalis Rosea, is a winter-flowering cherry tree grown for its pale pink, semi-double flowers that appear from late autumn through winter into early spring. Unlike most flowering cherry trees, this autumn cherry tree provides colour during the colder months when very little else is in flower.
This ornamental cherry tree has a naturally spreading habit, forming a rounded canopy over time. It is considered a small to medium tree, typically reaching around 4-5 metres over 10-20 years, with an eventual height of up to 8 metres and a spread of around 4 metres, depending on conditions.
Flowers open from darker pink buds and fade to a softer pale pink, creating a layered effect across the branches. The flowering is intermittent, usually triggered by mild spells, which extends the display across several months rather than a short spring burst.
In autumn, Prunus autumnalis rosea foliage turns shades of yellow, orange and bronze before falling, adding a second season of interest. This autumn cherry tree also holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, confirming its reliability and performance in UK conditions.

Planting Pink Autumn Cherry Tree
This winter-flowering cherry tree is straightforward to grow and suits most UK gardens. It grows best in full sun for maximum flowering, is suitable for clay, chalk, loam and sandy soils, and tolerates acid, neutral and alkaline conditions.
It is a good choice for smaller gardens. Shelter from strong winds will help protect flowers during winter.
Pruning Pink Autumn Cherry Tree
This is a low-maintenance ornamental cherry tree that requires very little pruning once established.
- Only prune if necessary to shape or remove dead or damaged wood
- Always prune in summer
- Avoid winter pruning to reduce the risk of silver leaf and other diseases
