Cheals Weeping Cherry Tree - Prunus Kiku shidare zakura

Prunus 'Kiku shidare zakura', commonly known as the Cheals Weeping Cherry, is one of our most popular weeping cherry trees. The distinctive shape makes it stand out from your average cherry blossom tree all year round, and once the deep pink, double flowers appear in spring, you have one of the best flowering cherry tree displays.

Its spring foliage emerges bronze-green, then matures to a fresh glossy green as the season develops. If you find the leaves becoming darker the longer you look at them, this could be caused by sunset. The combination of drooping habit, double pink flowers and attractive foliage makes this ornamental cherry tree especially popular as a feature tree in smaller spaces.

This small weeping cherry tree is well suited to compact gardens, patios and front gardens where space is limited. At around 10 years old, it typically reaches about 2.5 metres in height, though mature specimens can grow to around 4 metres in ideal conditions. Left unpruned, the spread is usually similar to the height, giving it the classic rounded, cascading shape that makes a Japanese weeping cherry tree so appealing.

The Cheals Weeping Cherry is often chosen by gardeners who want a weeping cherry tree for a small garden or a reliable patio cherry blossom tree.

Large, Established and Mature Cherry Blossom Trees

We sell a broad range of larger, older and more established weeping cherry trees, often 20 years old or more. We can usually source even larger mature weeping cherry trees than those shown here, although it can take a little time while we call our suppliers, who then call their growers, who in turn call their grower mates. We know technology would be quicker, but their idea of getting to grips with Apple is refusing to let go of a Golden Delicious. Contact us and tell us what you are looking for, along with your budget and delivery postcode, as most people want the largest tree they can get for the money.

Planting Prunus Kiku shidare zakura - Cheals Weeping Cherry

For best results, plant your Cheals Weeping Cherry tree in a sunny, sheltered position in fertile, well-drained soil. This variety will tolerate a wide range of soil types, including chalk and clay, making it a dependable ornamental cherry tree for UK gardens. If you have purchased a young 2 to 3 year plant, lightly shortening the leader by a few centimetres after planting can encourage stronger branching and a fuller shape.

Prunus Kiku shidare zakura is fully hardy to around -20°C, so it is suitable for gardens throughout the UK.

Pruning Mature Prunus Kiku shidare zakura - Cheals Weeping Cherry

As a general rule, this weeping cherry tree needs very little pruning. Light shaping is usually all that is required to maintain its elegant form. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches as needed, and prune only lightly to preserve the natural cascading habit that makes this weeping cherry blossom tree so attractive.

See What Our Customers Are Saying About Our Kiku shadare zakura Cheals Weeping Cherry
Hi, Just wanted to say a massive thank you for my *mature Prunus Kiku-Shadare-Zakura tree delivery today, it is lovely Kind regards Katy Site Owner 0422

Hi, I haven't heard from you but today I received my (Cheals Weeping Cherry) tree. It's stunning, couldn't be any happier! Many thanks, Simona 0718

Hi Senior Dogsbody, Sorry it has been so long in letting you know that I have arrived. I have been settling in and getting to know my new friends, so have had very little time to get in touch. My new owners are very pleased with me, and have now even mowed the grass at my feet to show me off better since these photos were taken. I love it here in sunny Devon, and have heard that my new owners plan even more new friends for me, so I am very excited! They look after me really well, and I get lots of water and mulch. By the way, I am not Trev the tree.....I am Cherry the Tree! Love Cherry 0618 Editors note...this tree testimonial about our Cheals Weeping Cherry tree is in response to our "unusual" email asking for one. If you viewed the email we sent, the customer looks sane and we do not, not the other way round when you view this half of the conversation.

Hello Alan, one tree arrived on Wednesday and the other two on Thursday, which was great as I was on site and planted them on Friday morning. All three looked like lovely specimens, well grown and undamaged by transit. I couldn't have picked better myself. The couriers were helpful and careful so I'd give you an 8 or 9 out of 10! (like to leave room for improvement) As we will be working at this garden again in the spring I'll be able to check they're growing well. Thank you for a great service. Happy for you to use this as a testimonial. Best wishes Yvonne Say 0114

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.

Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Climate Change
Climate Change has increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust, frost damage etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season or less. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy and will bounce back.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.

Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.

Fruit On Ornamental Cherry Trees
