Magnolia Spectrum
Magnolia Spectrum has fewer but larger flowers than some of its Magnolia counterparts. The picture should tell you what colour the flowers are but For the ladies this could be described as Summer passion blush with a hint of Coral. For the blokes, it is dark pink (thanks to the woman in my life for pointing out what blush is!)
Clay, loamy or sandy, this tree will tolerate nearly all soil conditions. Lava flows and chemical dumping grounds would probably cause it a problem before some one out there tries to prove a point.
It will not like getting its feet wet like most other Magnolias so make sure the soil has good drainage. Trying to fit "wellies" to the biggest roots will be a complete waste of time.
These are good low maintenance trees but pick a good spot for it as they are like your grumpy grand parents and not keen on change. Circumstances that is, not lower denominations of currency.
You should be looking at a mature height of around 13m but this is weather and site specific. Expect a 10 year height of around 4-6 m.
The tree is supplied with the rootball intact in compost which means you can plant these any time of the year. Great for the genocidal gardeners out there with fingers capable of sucking the life out of anything plant like as you only need to plant and water initially. Feeding and maintenance comes later but at least the tree has a fighting chance before then!
Message card included at no additional cost if required. Just add the information required on the card at checkout.
Magnolia Spectrum Options
We usually have several options to choose from and these are:
100cm+ : Usually in a 5-12 Litre pot and will be around the 100-180 cm height range
150cm+ : Usually in a 7-20 litre pot and will be around the 150-240cm height range.
Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.
Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
Our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.
Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.
General Magnolia Information
Magnolias are generally a low maintenance tree that can tolerate a small amount of drought but not wet for too long so make sure the soil has good drainage. Frequent watering in Summer is better than one large drowning. Magnolias do not require a great deal of pruning but removing dead, diseased and crossed over branches is a good idea. Pick a good spot for planting and do not move them as they may rebel against it by hiding the remote control or not being as vigorous as before. In summary they don't like to be moved/transplanted.
They are ancient trees going back 20 million years (the species, not individual trees) and the flowers evolved before bees so relied on a beetle pollination (maybe the original phrase was busy as a beetle?). The UK climate is excellent for Magnolias and they are generally happy to be pruned hard. This means cutting a lot off, not dressing up a Rambo with pruning shears.
