Taller options available for most trees. Please use the contact us page stating species, height range and postcode for more info.
An attractive fast-growing, deciduous conifer, the Dawn Redwood tree (Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Gold Rush') is distinguished by its attractive green foliage which changes to an eye-catching creamy-yellow in autumn before shedding. Once thought to be extinct, this tree was re-discovered in the 1940's.
A large tree, so expect a height of in excess of 6 metres (20 foot) after 10 years.
Dawn Redwood is supplied at a height of between 1.3 and 2.40m in a 7L to 20L container for year round planting and better results than from bare-root or rootballed stock. 12L pots arguably have larger roots and could be a taller tree.
They are between 2-3 years old which is a very good age to transplant trees.
We usually have three options to choose from which are:
5-7L Pots and 100-150cm tall
7-12L Pots and are 150-180cm tall
10-20L Pots and are 180-240cm tall
If any of these options are not listed then we are out of stock or the person who updates the website is asleep.
You can write a personal message for the recipient at checkout, it is mail merged with the packing slip so they will know who it is from.
What Our Customers Are Saying About Our Dawn Redwood Trees
Hello Alan, Gold Rush Tree arrived excellent condition. Looks lovely, very pleased. Thanking you, Susan 0814
Hello there, Thank you for the missive re our Dawn Redwood tree which is currently glowing in the sunshine. It was a little stressed on arrival with the tip bent over but it is straightening up slowly. The courier brought the tree almost to our house but as we live down a quarter mile track he can be excused. Our neighbour passed it on to us so it did not stay too long in the box. We were pleased to get our Redwood tree after much searching and look forward to its becoming a beautiful addition to our garden in the years to come. yours Liz Ball. 1013

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.
Early Autumn Leaf Fall
Heat stress, being potted, lack of water, being boxed up for a few days etc can cause early Autumn leaf fall. Once planted, normal service will resume next season.
Do I Need To Stake My Ornamental Tree?
9 out of 10 times the answer will be no, especially if under 200cm tall. However our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.
UK Grown Ornamental Trees
All our trees are banned from overseas travel so that we can state they are all UK grown. We have removed Internet access from the nursery so they cannot book any flights.
Warm and wet conditions from Climate Change have increased aesthetic foliage issues such as Powdery Mildew, Shothole, Rust etc These are not terminal issues and will usually last a season. All trees are inspected before being sent out to ensure they are fundamentally healthy.
Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.
Mature Tree Warranty
Once a tree is over 3 years old, the failure rate is considerably less and our Tree Warranty does not cover it at 100%. Please check details.
