Mature Fagus Sylvatica Purpurea Tricolor Beech Tree
Purpurea Tricolor (Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea Tricolor') is a medium-sized tree with an expected height and width of around 8m x 4m at 10 years. If you notice it is 4m x 8m then someone has cut it down or you have broken your neck Also known as Roseomarginata or in less formal sheds, the "middle-aged man tree" due to its rounded and spreading shape, not because it is bald on top and doesn't make wood like it used to.
This beech has a very attractive form with irregular pink margins to the purple leaves. The tree develops a lighter canopy than most beech. A frequent addition to many public parks and gardens due its striking foliage. Fagus Purpurea Tricolor is easy to maintain and has the ability to withstand winds or exposed sites. A very hardy tree capable of withstanding temperatures around minus 30 degrees centigrade.
Planting Fagus Purpurea Tricolor
For best results plant in fertile loamy soil and well-draining soil with around a neutral PH. It can withstand exposed sites (wind not nudity) and full sun to partial shade. Not suitable for coastal sites. Non-coastal sites have bar propping fisherman complaining about anything except Brexit.
This tree is not so happy in heavy clay soils with poor drainage but is chalk tolerant. For the average gardener who may not be sure of their soil type, if you take a handful of earth and squeeze it in your hand and let go, what is left in your hand tells you what type of soil you have. If it falls apart immediately then you have very sandy soil. If after a gentle manipulation it stays in the same shape then you have a very heavy or clay soil. A loamy soil is somewhere in the middle i.e. you need to gently manipulate or squeeze the ball several times to break it up completely. Adding compost or well-rotted manure to clay and sandy soil will bring you closer to loamy soil.

This tree prefers to be left alone when it comes to pruning. It is the sort of "left alone" you offer when your partner/wife screams that they are "FINE", you only intervene when something is very wrong.
Definitely cut out dead diseased or crossing over branches when the tree is in it's dormant phase which is November to March.

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.
