Acer Campestre Elegant, AKA Huibers Elegant (Often shortened to just Acer Elegant)
A tree so tough, not even slow roasting it for 2 hours would soften it up, and deals with coastal conditions so well, you could probably tie ships to it. It is a good choice for low-maintenance gardens (only fake grass is less maintenance) or parks and it deals with the surrounding soil being paved over without issue. Tolerant of salt spray, high winds, drought and pollution.
A medium-height tree growing to around 7 x 4m at the 10-year point and likely will end up around 10 x 6m. The growers describe the shape as starting off as a narrow egg and growing into a wide egg shape. We don't envisage any large and confused chickens trying to hatch your tree. The slim profile of the tree makes it suitable for narrow gardens or if you don't want to block off whole chunks of sky.
Expect small bright green leaves in spring that turn yellow and golden yellows in autumn. If you get fast unexpected colour changes with rapid leaf loss then please check you are not in a forest fire before contacting us.
The flowers are closer to cute and discreet than "What a waste of time that was! Was it worth the effort? Don't bother next time, I don't know why I bother looking sometimes". They are green-yellow and do a fine job of attracting the local buzzies e.g. wasps, bees etc. These turn into green/brown fruits that look like a couple of boomerangs connected together. With a dense foliage it makes for a good shade provider, wind break and good nesting place for birds.
The bark will be a grey-brown colour with furrows as it ages. If you want more bark in the garden, then get a noisy dog.
With climate change on everyone's lips (we suggest using Chapstick if it gets too dry) then this is a great choice of tree planting to cope with the more extremes of weather.
The root system is described by the growers as deep and shallow with a central root plus many fine hair roots.

Ornamental Tree Roots In The Shade e.g. Behind A Fence
It is more important that that foliage (posh term for leaves) receives the sunlight than the roots. So if the canopy of your ornamental tree can sunbathe but the bottom of your tree thinks there has been a nuclear winter then that is ok. You might want to ensure you have good drainage as water and no sun is the start of algae and other such issues.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Air and light is reduced in this location which could promote fungus and bacterial issues. If the corner is of the house and a fence then you also have leeching issues to contend with from cement and wood preservatives. Also when it rains, that area would experience higher water levels so we advise against it unless the plant is very hardy.
