Bare Root Carpinus Betulus Frans Fontaine Hornbeam
Our bare root Frans Fontaine is narrow, upright and perfect for tight spaces (not narrow car parking bays). A tight columnar variety of European Hornbeam and ideal for formal rows, privacy screens, or small urban gardens, this low-maintenance tree (no need for oil changes) is tough, shapely, and stylish and grows to around 10 x 3 m. Good for planting in places with pollution, drought, compacted soil, and urban conditions. Considered to be narrower than the Fastigiata variant.
The foliage is green in spring/summer, golden yellow in autumn, often holds copper leaves through winter and has a moderate growth rate which is about 30cm a year. The dense foliage is considered wildlife friendly as it offers excellent nesting opportunities and protection from spy satellites (at least that is how the avian estate agents will describe it).
As the tree only grows male flowers, it does not produce any fruit so the "family tree" starts and stops with the tree you buy unless you have grafting skills.
The roots grow relatively close to the surface so that might be a consideration to some gardens.
