Sensation Pear Tree (BARE ROOT)

The Sensation pear tree is a good eating apple tree that provides fruit late in the season but also provides a striking shiny red foliage with white flowers that really makes it stand out in your garden. The only other way we can think of to make this tree stand out more is to hire cheap labour (maybe from less economically affluent areas of the EU) to stand in your garden with a large sign saying "look at my pear tree" and arm them with a megaphone for them to attract others attention, although you may need to work on their accent first!

Month Of Fruiting: September
Type of Pear: Eating and Cooking
Fertility: C5 requires another pear tree to produce fruit from pollination groups C4 or C5.

Do I Need To Stake My Bare Root Tree?
Usually no, especially if under 200cm tall. Our article on Tree Staking should help guide you.

Planting In The Corner Of A Garden
Usually air and light is reduced and if it is a corner with a wooden fence and the house then leeching from both could compound issues. Try to avoid.

1 Year Maiden Bare Root Trees
If you plant a 1 Year maiden tree and do not prune it at all, it will grow a little more upright and have more clear stem

Which Type Of Pear Tree Rootstock To Choose:

Those in the horticultural business love their technical lingo, so here is something to help you decipher Gobbeldy Gook from the Green Fingered Brigade. Each rootstock description is made up of several terms from one or more of the following:

Cordon            :  Columnar shape and short branches. Ideal for space saving and quick fruiting (possibly first year)
Quince C         :  Will reach approx. 2.5 metres. Fruits quicker than Quince A and Kirchensellar
Quince Eline : Almost identical to Quince C but but has superior cold hardiness.
Quince A         :  Will reach approx. 3.5 metres. Fruits quicker than Kirchensellar
Kirchensaller:  Will reach approx. 6.0+ metres.
Half Standard: Trunk clear of branches for around 1 metre and is traditional tree shaped. Good for gardens e.g. easy mowing and companion planting underneath.
Straight Lead: Much more of a clear trunk than a Half Standard, usually around 2.0 + metres.
Bush            : Pruned so that branches start around 45cm from the ground.
Maiden            : 1-2 years old and unpruned, ideal for shaping into Fan, Espalier, step over etc
Bare Root       :
There is no soil or pot around the roots which are wrapped in a bag and are cheaper than containerised.
1 Year             : Pear Tree will be between 1 and 2 years old
2 Year             : Pear Tree will be between 2 and 3 years old

Fruiting Times For Bare Root Pear Trees
The general rule of thumb with most fruit trees is that the smaller the ultimate height of the tree, the sooner it will bear fruit. Pear trees around 2.5 metres could fruit in 1-2 years whereas those at 6+ metres could be as much as 5 years. Weather can increase or decrease these times.
